Sustainable
Consumption and Conspicuous Consumption In Developing
Countries
Consumption has
always been a phenomena since the beginning of the history
of the mankind; and it will coexist as long as the mankind
is intendent to protect its own existance. However, it is
rather obvious that new meanings were uploaded to the
concept of “consumption” in each period whenever new
developments emerged. People nowadays reflect to be
unsatisfied with what they have and to be wishing to have
better and new ones. This process indicates and makes the
dynamics of market economy more obvious. These dynamics have
been determining the economy as a value by highlighting the
consumtion phenomena; and will to consume has been turning
into a more concrete form that is eroding the quality of
living conditions of both the poor and the wealthy
altogether.
The consumption
culture has been apperant in the forms and habits of
consumption absorbed with the popular culture by imposing
its dominance with the media -becoming an influential
institution over the society of every age group and social
class - and allienation phenomena. Today, it has been an
inevitable part of the daily life to reflect a set of
attitudes of a unlimited consumership. Sustainable
development is a transformation process aiming to increase
the living standards today and in the future.
Because to
consume more than whatever is necessary (overconsumption) or
to consume unconsciously (i.e. conspicuous consumption), is
a form of hidden threat for both our personal health and
personal budget and moreover, it is an unconsciously waste
of sustainable natural resources and environment.
Within the
framework of sustainable consumption, the dimensions of the
apperant conspicuous consumption in the developing countries
will be tried to be analized by focusing on the sample
countries comperatively. |
